Monumento: 872

From REMAP

REMAP hosted the event Monumento: 872 at its Downtown Los Angeles satellite site, the Chiparaki Cultural Computing Center, on 15 June 2007. The evening was an opportunity for guests to unearth and engage nocturnal Los Angeles using mobile devices, GPS tracking, and media databases; the event culminated with the creation of a live media collage by visitors, surrounding communities, and online participants.

More specifically, the evening of culture explored the artistic and historical landscapes of Los Angeles by harnessing the expressive potential of emerging mobile media, live music, graph art, live artist performances, and an installation of art objects. Poignantly, the event was celebrated on the sites of one of Los Angeles' latest "historical cultural monuments" - the Juncture Block Building - and at the nearby, new Los Angeles State Historic Park. In addition to enjoying the festive atmosphere, live music, and cultural exhibit, visitors were be able to participate in a number of "urban explorations" of north-east Downtown Los Angeles.

Special thanks goes to Nokia and Cisco for donating technology, NSF CENS for their software development, and the dedicated art and media students of UCLA for their creation of a cultural civic computing system. Their work allowed participants in the Monumento: 872 event to share in their experiences by creating collaborative media maps of the city.
