Computing, networks, sensing and media technologies lie at the core of significant social and cultural transformations taking place today. Resonating at personal, regional and global levels, these changes and their associated technologies are defining forces rapidly penetrating public and private life. They shape our understanding of self and community.

Recognizing this, REMAP is committed to seeking a significant role in a diverse spectrum of communities: from the professional fields of media production, performing arts and engineering to the local groups it is already working with in Latin America, Europe and Los Angeles.

In its projects, REMAP brings artists and engineers together to examine the sources and processes of new techno-cultural changes. They are asked to imagine alternative visions for artistic expression and engineering innovation integrated with community involvement. They are supported in creating projects together that explore new modes of expression, interrogate cultural biases of technology, demystify its utilization, and create pragmatic tools for community-specific applications.

Anchored in the social aspects of technological and artistic research, our aspiration is to work out a role of service to these diverse communities. As a result, REMAP’s research, production and education efforts are often realized in public art and engineering projects that serve as arenas for dialogue and collective expression.
